ASI Group

Business Development Representative, Biofouling & Mussel Monitoring, Orchard Park, NY

The Business Development Representative – Biofouling & Mussel Monitoring (USA) is responsible for identifying, developing, and closing new business opportunities for ASI’s Biofouling division across the United States. This is a market-development role focused on the largely underpenetrated US mussel monitoring and control market—including cold calling, prospecting, account farming, and lead generation—while nurturing client relationships in target sectors. The successful candidate must have experience in environmental services, water treatment, industrial services, or adjacent markets, with a strong preference for candidates with direct exposure to biofouling, invasive species management, water intake systems, or power/industrial facility operations. The incumbent will play a vital role in establishing ASI Group’s Biofouling division as the leading mussel monitoring and control provider in the US market by building a pipeline from scratch and translating technical capability into commercial wins.

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 30–50% travel within the United States of America, including client site visits, industry events, and occasional travel to ASI office locations.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and passport and be willing to travel internationally and regionally for client meetings, site visits, and industry events.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development & Sales
  • Proactively develop new business opportunities in target sectors including power generation, municipal water utilities, industrial water intake, and marine infrastructure through cold calling, prospecting, networking, and industry event participation.
  • Develop and maintain a robust sales pipeline for the Biofouling business unit, with focus on mussel monitoring programs, chemical treatment contracts, and annual service agreements, while cross-selling applicable services from other ASI business units.
  • Conduct technical presentations and site assessments with facility engineers, environmental managers, and operations decision-makers to demonstrate ASI’s mussel monitoring and control capabilities.
  • Follow up on proposals and service bids in coordination with ASI’s Biofouling technical team; manage multi-stakeholder buying processes through to contract close.
  • Monitor market developments including regulatory changes around invasive species, water quality compliance requirements, and competitor activity; report findings to the Director of Sales.
Account Management & Client Relations
  • Manage and grow existing accounts to maximize client satisfaction and repeat business.
  • Conduct regular client check-ins, annual program reviews, and site inspections to ensure service excellence and identify upsell opportunities.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for key accounts and coordinate internal teams for client deliverables.
Market Intelligence & Strategy
  • Gather, analyze, and report on industry trends in biofouling and invasive species management, regulatory developments (EPA, Army Corps of Engineers, state-level), competitor activities, and client feedback to inform sales and marketing strategies.
  • Identify emerging US market segments, geographic expansion opportunities, and potential partnership channels (e.g., engineering firms, utilities consultants, water infrastructure contractors).
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of regional business development plans.
Internal Collaboration & Reporting
  • Work closely with operational, technical, and marketing teams to ensure aligned strategies and successful project delivery.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records, sales activities, and forecasting data in the CRM system.
  • Provide regular sales performance reports to the VP of BD.
Other Duties
  • Other duties as assigned

Competencies

Skills & Competencies
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Environmental Science, Biology, Marine Studies, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 3–7 years of business development or technical sales experience in environmental services, water treatment, industrial services, or adjacent markets; experience opening new markets strongly preferred over account management-only backgrounds.
  • Prior exposure to biofouling, invasive mussel species (Dreissenid mussels, zebra/quagga mussels), water intake systems, industrial cooling water systems, or power generation facility operations strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to open and develop new markets independently, without a pre-existing playbook; must be comfortable as the first ASI representative in an untapped region or sector
  • Proficiency with CRM platforms (Monday.com preferred) and MS Office Suite; strong forecast discipline and CRM compliance required.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
  • Number of new accounts acquired and qualified leads generated.
  • Revenue growth from new and existing clients against goals.
