ASI Marine returns to where first records were set for long distance tunnel inspection
ASI Marine’s team returned to Peru to provide an inspection of a Hydroelectric facility’s 20 km tunnel. This is the same tunnel that kicked off ASI’s long tunnel specialty services over 20 years ago. Over the years, ASI Marine has repeatedly matched it’s record setting 1999 achievement of 10 km excursions with ASI’s Mantaro (retired) and modified Mohican remotely operated vehicle (ROV) systems.
The project was completed in conjunction with ASI Group’s Chilean partner DS Group, in a remote location in the Peruvian Andes, making for some striking scenery (not your typical “view from the office”). As part of the inspection and planning phases, two ROVs were used at the beginning of the project to conduct simultaneous investigations at opposite ends of the tunnel, requiring advanced planning and coordinated efforts. The underwater visibility limited the pilots using multiple sonar systems to navigate, investigate and document the conditions of the tunnel. A combination of very high-resolution sonar systems were added to the vehicles to assist the pilots in successfully navigating through the tunnel.
ASI Marine once again provided excellent service to the prominent client and was successful in completeing a challenging inspection to the client’s satisfaction.
